What it could mean for Sturry and Broad Oak.

At a recent public meeting, Ann Davies, Chair of Sturry parish Council gave a presentation on some of the issues that affect our area. Ann, and the rest of the councillors present urged residents to write in to Canterbury City Council with their comments.

One of the many reasons why the Local Plan is bad for Sturry and Broad Oak

Here is the response from our local MP, Rosie Duffield.

Decisions for local areas are always better when there is substantial engagement from residents in those places.

The deadline for the Canterbury City Council Local Plan Consultation is swiftly approaching, on Monday 16th January 2023 at 5pm.

I encourage all constituents to get involved and make their views known. This can be done via consultations@canterbury.gov.uk

The City Council’s preferred option is for between 14,000 and 17,000 new homes to be built in the District by 2040, mainly focused on Canterbury. They want these extra homes, so that they can afford to build a new by-pass around Canterbury.

I don’t think the plans put forward by the Council are right for our communities because:

1) It is considerably more than the 9000 needed, according to the Government’s own estimates.

2) Given the climate emergency that we are facing, the Council should be aiming to improve rail and bus services and make it easier for people to cycle and walk.

3) Focusing all of the housing on Canterbury will mean that housing in Whitstable and our villages will continue to be out of the reach of young people.
