Make sure that you are able to vote
In the May elections, you will now need to show proof of identity before being handed your ballot paper.
So what counts as proof of identity? According to the Electoral Commission, who run the elections, the following are permissible.
International travel
- Passport issued by the UK, any of the Channel Islands, the Isle of Man, a British Overseas Territory, an EEA state or a Commonwealth country
Driving and Parking
- Driving licence issued by the UK, any of the Channel Islands, the Isle of Man, or an EEA state (this includes a provisional driving licence)
- A Blue Badge
Local travel
- Older Person’s Bus Pass funded by the Government of the United Kingdom
- Disabled Person’s Bus Pass funded by the Government of the United Kingdom
- Oyster 60+ Card funded by the Government of the United Kingdom
- Freedom Pass
Proof of age
- Identity card bearing the Proof of Age Standards Scheme hologram (a PASS card)
Other government issued documents
- Biometric immigration document
- Ministry of Defence Form 90 (Defence Identity Card)
- National identity card issued by an EEA state
- Voter Authority Certificate

Not OK
A lot of student id cards will be considered invalid. Please be sure to check.
What if identification is out of date?
This does not matter – expired forms of identification will be accepted provided that the photograph is a good enough likeness.
Can I get a postal vote?
Anyone can apply for a postal vote. It is better to register as soon as possible. You can do so by following this link
